Kentucky Army National Guard troops provide relief to Louisville and state after hurricane winds.

Louisville, Ky. -- Governor Steven L. Beshear directed Sept. 15 the Kentucky National Guard to provide additional support in the wake of high winds that damaged homes and shut down power to more than 400,000 citizens in Jefferson County and across the state.

30 Soldiers from the Louisville-based 223rd Military Police Company assisted the Louisville Metro Police officers in directing traffic at intersections where traffic lights are inoperable. In addition, 64 Soldiers and 18 five-ton trucks from Glasgow-based 1st Battalion, 623rd Field Artillery provided debris removal in Louisville, along with transportation support to the Louisville Public Works Department.

Capt. Mark Wilson, a Louisville resident and Intelligence Officer with the 623rd FA, said that with the Ryder Cup in town, the world spotlight is on Louisville, Ky right now.

"This is a great opportunity to showcase Louisville, even in a time of crisis," Wilson said.  "I live here and feel very fortunate to be able to help my neighbors in need, as well as show the world how great this city is."

Kentucky Army National troops have also provided power generator support to a medical facility in Lewisport (Hancock County), the Muhlenberg Co. water plant and the Women's Prison in Pee Wee Valley, Oldham County.

OCS Graduation Aug. 16, 2008

Sixteen of Kentucky's newest second lieutenants raise their right hand, taking the oath of office from Col. Judy Greene-Baker, commander of the 238th Regiment (Combat Arms). Twelve of the new lieutenants are graduates of the Kentucky National Guard's OCS program, based at the 238th Regiment located at the Wendell H. Ford Regional Training Center in Greenville, Ky., while four lieutenants graduated from the accelerated OCS Program based at Fort McClellan, Ala.

Leap Festival Aug. 9, 2008

Soldiers from 20th Special Forces Group based out of Louisvile, Ky., participated in the 26th annual Leap Fest in Kingston, R.I. Aug. 9. The five-man team took part in three jumps out of a CH-47 Chinook competing for the best score judged on time, form and landing.

 

  

Sgt. 1st Class Garcia jumps out of a CH-47 Chinook and after performing a parachute landing fall, dashes to the target 'X' where his time will be recorded and added to the rest of the 20th Group Special Forces (Airborne) team.

Hurricane Gustav 2008

Kentucky Army National Guard troops, helicopters to support Hurricane Gustav relief mission

Frankfort, Ky. -- Governor Steven L. Beshear and Adjutant General Edward W. Tonini directed the deployment of more than 350 troops and five Kentucky Army National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk and three OH-58 Kiowa helicopters in support of Hurricane Gustav relief missions in Louisiana.

Aircraft crews from the 63rd Theater Aviation Brigade began pre-flight operations 8 a.m. Sunday, Aug.31 at the Army Aviation Support Facility located at Boone National Guard Center in Frankfort. 

As of Sept. 2, 392 Army National Guard Soldiers deployed out of state to support Louisiana.
